Cantori New York

Mark Shapiro, director

Praised by the New York Times for its “spirit of exploration” and qualities of “virtuosity and assurance”, Cantori New York feted its 30th year in 2014, always faithful to its mission of presenting new compositions as well as neglected works that deserve the public’s attention and appreciation.

Three-time winner of ASCAP’s “Adventurous Programming” prize in recognition of its audacious repertoire, Cantori New York has acquired a solid reputation as an accomplished and innovative vocal ensemble.

The group counts among its collaborators actors such as Maryanne Plunkett and Kathleen Chalfant, both lauded by the Tony and Obie Awards for their superb talent; as well as such distinguished musicians as the Cassatt String Quartet, violist Nadia Sirota and violinist Miranda Cuckson.

The ensemble’s desire to work with living composers has led to premieres of more than 100 compositions, and has most recently been manifested by the commission of new works by creators such as Mohammed Fairouz, Lembit Beecher and Piotr Moss.

In addition to exceptional artistic collaborations, Cantori New York has also participated in prestigious musical events, including the Great Performances series at Lincoln Center, the opening season of Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall with Michael Tilson Thomas, and the Arts & Events festival at the World Financial Center.

Cantori New York has a varied discography including, among others, The Metamorphoses by British composer Paul Crabtree and Echos and Shadows, a compilation of contemporary American pieces for vocal ensemble. The choir also sings on the very first CD recording of Le vin herbé by the Swiss composer Frank Martin, which was selected as an Editor’s Choice by Opera News.
